Would you poke a hole in a condom?

OK…. Now that I have your attention, I am metaphorically asking that question in regard to covid-19.  Experts have recommended several prophylactic measures  we can take to ward-off this virus such as handwashing, social distancing, refrain from handshaking, covering sneezing and coughing, etc.  However, there is no guarantee that these measures will prevent us from acquiring the virus.

We also know that those with weaker immune systems are more susceptible to suffering the brunt of the virus.  However, with a few exceptions, many health professionals are ignoring the emotional prophylactic measures we can take to strengthen our immune system. We can adhere to all of the above physical prophylactic measures above….and yet “poke a hole” in them if we don’t safeguard our immune system.

Neuroscientific research shows that stress and anxiety both cause a weakening in our immune system by triggering your stress response and release a flood of chemicals and hormones into our system. As humans, thanks to the amygdala, we are hardwired to have stressful and anxious thoughts especially when faced with anything we don’t’ fully understand (the unknown), anything that we can’t control, and many things that require sudden changes in our lives. High stress levels also can cause depression.

Here are some suggestions that you may consider that may relieve your feelings of the stress and anxiety perpetuated by this Covid-19 pandemic….and maintain a healthy immune system especially in view of social distancing.

  1. As a Mindfulness teacher, I realize my first suggestion, is somewhat biased. Evidence supports that a daily practice of Mindfulness, any other form of meditation and yoga can lower overall stress levels and boost the immune system.

  2. Reduce your attention to the media and news watching.  Watch sporadically to catch up, but don’t linger on statistics. Leave those for scientists and statisticians.

  3. Spend your time focused on other matters. Revive an old interest or hobby. Re-stimulate that sense of childhood curiosity. Research and learn something new. The internet is such a valuable tool. Use it.

  4. Catch-up on those missed TV and streaming series or documentaries you have always wanted to watch.  (although you may want to avoid apocalyptic films or shows).

  5. Read books or listen to them until your heart’s content.

  6. Try your hand at writing. Within each of us is at least a volume of poetry.

  7. If you are with a partner or family members, talk, bond, play games, and learn more about each other.

  8. Eat healthy. Try some new recipes.  Get plenty of sleep. All of these actions will boost your immune system. And yes….unfortunately (given the run on liquor and pot stores) be aware that both alcohol and pot weaken the immune system.

And I am sure you can find many other options to occupy your time…and turn your focus away from those thoughts that create within you those feelings of stress, anxiety and worry.  Be aware when these thoughts and feelings occur.  Rather than react to them, just respond to them.  Recognize them but don’t linger on them. Readjust your focus….and both you and your immune system will be in good shape.  And be kind to one another as we are all in this together! If this has helped just one reader, then mission accomplished!
