When we refer to pests, more often than not, we think of mosquitoes, flies, ants, roaches, wasps, and other assorted creatures that invade our homes. And, of course, they do cause us a degree of uneasiness and sometimes some pain. (in the you-know-where and elsewhere)
But there is a whole realm of other pests that invade our lives. I am specifically talking about THOUGHTS; and, aside from our physical health, they can also play havoc with our emotional status quo. Our pesky thoughts are capable of creating reactions such as stress, anxiety, low self-esteem, worry, depression, insomnia, and a lack of productivity, just to name a few.
And the worse is yet to come! Those feelings are not only detrimental to our emotional health, they are then reflected in our physical well-being. These feelings arise from both our conscious and subconscious thoughts. These thought are like eggs wherein they give birth to our feelings. It is well documented these feelings of uneasiness in our lives are perpetuated by our negative thoughts which may then lead to high blood pressure, stomach, bowel, and other intestinal problems, skin conditions, headaches, a general breakdown of our immune system leaving us more susceptible to common colds, flu, etc.
One the best repellents to exterminate those thoughts that interfere with our well-being is AWARENESS. If we can become aware of our thoughts… where and who they come from, whether there is any basis to their truth, we can choose to simply acknowledge them rather than react to them…. to simply “let them be”. If we can learn to repel our thoughts about the past or the future, we can begin to live and appreciate, to sustain and find joy, in the present moment. It is only by living in the present that we can affect change in our lives.
Mindfulness is a wonderful and effective remedy to learning how to control the flow of your thoughts by allowing you to exercise an increased sense of awareness and to assist you in finding happiness and contentment in the “present” moment.
